English ↔ Romanian
Family and origins
English belongs to the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European family.
The earliest forms of the language, brought to England by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the 5th century, are known as Old English.
Its pronunciation system and language structure combine a Germanic foundation with elements borrowed from French, Latin, and Greek, giving English a complex structure with grammatical and lexical rules that are sometimes difficult to master.
Spread and Status
English functions today as a global lingua franca.
It is the official language in approximately 60 countries and the most widely spoken language in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand.
It is also widely used in the Caribbean, Africa, and South Asia.
Globally, English is the third most spoken language by native speakers, after Mandarin and Spanish.
Dialects and Varieties
English includes numerous regional and national dialects, the best known of which are British English and American English, which differ significantly in spelling, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Other differences arise in the use of expressions, verbs, and pronouns.
Writing
Since the 9th century, the English language has been written using the Latin alphabet.
The English spelling system combines phonetic rules, word stress, and syllable structure, but often remains inconsistent.
Writing can be difficult for students and translators due to irregular verbs, relative pronouns, and false friends (words similar in other languages but with different meanings, such as “eventually,” which in English means “in the end,” versus “eventual” in Romanian, which expresses a possibility).

Japanese ↔ Romanian
Family and origins
The Japanese language is a language native to East Asia, belonging to the Japanese language family.
The early history and origins of the language remain unclear.
The first recorded Japanese words appear in Chinese documents from the 3rd century, and substantial written texts date back to the 8th century.
Old Japanese was heavily influenced by Chinese, particularly in vocabulary and phonology.
Translation to and from Japanese can be difficult due to the absence of an explicit future tense, the flexibility of nouns to function as adjectives or adverbs, grammatical gender distinctions, and the need to restructure sentences to convey the correct meaning in other languages.
Distribution and status
It is spoken primarily in Japan, but was also used in Taiwan, Korea, China, the Philippines, and several Pacific islands during Japanese expansion up until World War II. Some older people in these regions can still speak Japanese.
Dialects and Varieties
Japanese comprises numerous dialects.
The most notable difference is between the Tokyo and Kyoto-Osaka accents.
Dialects from more remote areas can be difficult for speakers from other regions to understand.
Writing
Modern Japanese uses a combination of three scripts:
Kanji – Chinese characters, used for words borrowed from China and for native Japanese words with related meanings
Hiragana – a syllabary for grammatical terms and native words
Katakana – a syllabary for loanwords and onomatopoeia
The Latin alphabet is used in limited contexts (acronyms, romanization, pronunciation guides for non-Japanese speakers).
Arabic numerals are widely used, while kanji numerals still appear in certain compounds.
Literacy evolved through the adoption of the Chinese system, initially using characters for meaning rather than sound.
Take advantage of fast and professional Japanese translation services tailored to your needs.

Thai ↔ Romanian
Family and origins
Thai belongs to the Tai branch of the Tai-Kadai language family.
It is a tonal language with five distinct tones.
Distribution and status
Thai is spoken by approximately 20 million people as a native language and by another 40 million as a second language in Thailand.
It is the official language of Thailand, coexisting with many other regional languages.
Dialects and Varieties
Lao is the closest language and is mutually intelligible with Thai.
The standard language, often called Siamese, is based on the Central Thai dialect.
Thai comprises numerous regional varieties, which differ so much from the standard that linguists often classify them as related languages. Native speakers, however, generally consider them dialects of the Thai language.
Writing
The Thai writing system is an abugida: consonants are written from left to right, vowels combine with consonants and can appear before, after, above, or below them, or in combined positions, and tone marks are indicated by diacritics.

Arabic ↔ Romanian
Family and origins
Arabic is an Afro-Asiatic language spoken in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.
With approximately 420 million native speakers, it ranks among the six most widely spoken languages in the world.
Dialects and Varieties
Written Arabic exists in two main forms:
Classical Arabic – the language of the Quran and early Arabic literature; it differs from Modern Standard Arabic in style and vocabulary.
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)—serves as the common written and formal variant, used in literature, news, lectures, and other formal contexts, and is understood by all educated Arabic speakers.
Spoken dialects vary widely, with some being mutually unintelligible, leading linguists to sometimes consider them separate languages.
Translation from Arabic can be difficult due to significant cultural differences, expressions with no direct equivalent, and the specific emotional or cultural nature of many phrases.
Distribution and Status
Arabic is the official language of the 22 member states of the Arab League: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
Writing
The Arabic script developed from the Nabataean Aramaic script and has been in use since at least the 4th century AD.
The oldest known Arabic inscription dates from 512 AD and is written in Arabic, Syriac, and Greek.
Arabic is written horizontally, from right to left, and numbers follow the left-to-right direction.
The Arabic alphabet contains 28 letters.

Hebrew ↔ Romanian
Family and origins
Hebrew is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic family, closely related to the extinct Phoenician language and to Aramaic and Arabic.
By late antiquity, Hebrew had nearly ceased to be spoken, surviving mainly as a literary and liturgical language.
Modern Hebrew is a remarkable example of a linguistic revival, transforming a sacred and literary language into a living native language.
This revival was largely led by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda in the late 19th century and promoted through Israeli schools and institutions.
Distribution and Status
Approximately 9 million people speak Modern Hebrew in Israel and among the global Jewish diaspora.
It is the official language of Israel (alongside Arabic) and is recognized as a minority language in Poland.
Dialects and Varieties
Hebrew has evolved through several historical stages:
Biblical Hebrew – used in the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls (Qumran).
Mishnaic Hebrew – used in the Talmud.
Medieval Hebrew – developed by Jewish communities in the diaspora.
Over time, the Hebrew language has had distinct pronunciation traditions:
Ashkenazi Hebrew – Central and Eastern Europe.
Sephardic Hebrew – Spain and Portugal.
Oriental/Mizrahi Hebrew – Jewish communities in Arab and Islamic countries; often considered the closest to Biblical Hebrew.
Writing
Modern Hebrew is written from right to left using the Hebrew alphabet, which consists of 22 consonants.
The script derives from Aramaic and features characteristic “square” letter forms.
Take advantage of fast and professional Hebrew translation services tailored to your needs.

Distribution and status
Persian is the official language in Iran, Afghanistan (as Dari), and Tajikistan (as Tajiki, written in Cyrillic).
There are also communities of Farsi speakers in Iraq, Uzbekistan, Bahrain, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Russia.
Globally, it has approximately 110 million speakers, of whom 60–70 million are native speakers, the majority in Iran.
Persian has a rich literary tradition, including “One Thousand and One Nights” and the poetry of Saadi, Hafez, Rumi, and Omar Khayyam.
Dialects and Varieties
Modern Persian includes three main varieties:
Western Persian – spoken in Iran and communities in Iraq and the Persian Gulf;
Dari (Eastern Persian) – spoken in Afghanistan;
Tajiki – spoken in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
These are largely mutually intelligible but have distinct local features.
There are also regional dialects with varying degrees of difference from the standard.

Latin ↔ Romanian
Family and origins
Latin is a language belonging to the Indo-European family, dating back to the 5th century BC.
It developed as one of the Italic languages spoken in central Italy, particularly in Latium.
Latin is the foundation of modern Romance languages, including Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan.
The oldest known Latin inscriptions date back to the 6th century BC and were written in an alphabet adapted from Etruscan.
Spread and Status
As Rome expanded its influence throughout Italy and later, with the rise of the Roman Empire, Latin spread across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Within the empire, it was used in the legal system, administration, and everyday communication.
Today, Latin survives primarily as a liturgical language, serving as the official language of the Vatican, and in scientific nomenclature, particularly for the classification of living organisms.
Although still in use, it is considered a dead language, with no native speakers, and only a limited number of people can speak or translate it.
Dialects and Varieties
Latin had two main forms:
Classical Latin – the refined form used in literature;
Vulgar Latin – the form commonly spoken among the general population.
Vulgar Latin gradually evolved into the modern Romance languages, including Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan.
Writing
The oldest inscriptions were written in an adapted Etruscan alphabet.
The written form of Classical Latin remained standardized in literary and administrative documents.
